Belmont tops Palo Alto to reach tourney final
Belmont and Palo Alto will meet today at 11 a.m. at Belmont Sports Complex for the championship of the Babe Ruth District 6 15-year-old All-Stars Tournament. If Palo Alto wins that game, the double-elimination format will call for a second winner-take-all contest at 3 p.m.Belmont knocked off Palo Alto 12-10 on Friday, then waited Saturday as Palo Alto beat Mountain View 11-3 in the losers-bracket final. It was the second win over Mountain View for Palo Alto in the tournament.
Friday's game was tied 6-6 in the sixth inning before five straight walks ignited a game-winning Belmont rally.
"We can play with those guys, we just need to throw strikes," Palo Alto coach Ron Fried said.
Both teams had nine hits in that Friday contest. Belmont overcame six errors. Daniel Wendland got the win, Palo Alto's P.J. Braff took the loss. Tim Byrne picked up the save.
Belmont's Wesley Starr tripled and doubled and had four RBIs. Braff and Ryan Lackareff had doubles for Palo Alto. Lackareff had two hits and three RBIs in the game. Diekroeger had two hits and two RBIs for Palo Alto.
