Former USF player, booster Hal DeJulio dies at age 83

Hal DeJulio, a member of the University of San Francisco's 1949 NIT champion basketball team and who later proved instrumental in the recruiting of basketball legend Bill Russell to USF, passed away Saturday at age 83.

A public viewing will be held Friday at 5 p.m. at Graham-Hitch Mortuary in Pleasanton, with a vigil and rosary service to follow at 7. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Isadore's Church at 440 La Gorda Way in Danville.

DeJulio, a USF Hall of Fame member, later became a key booster. He served as a president and member of the USF Century Club, which supports USF Athletics.

"Hal was the most energetic, enthusiastic person I had ever met coming out of high school," said former Dons star Mike Farmer, a former NBA player. "He convinced me USF was the only place I could possibly go and play basketball and get an education and he was right. Hal was a great guy."

Menlo-Atherton all-stars made a strong run

The Menlo-Atherton 9-and-10-year-old All-Stars were eliminated after a four-game run in the District 52 tournament.

After losing its first game 8-6 to eventual runner-up San Carlos, M-A came back to beat Palo Alto and Pacifica behind terrific pitching performances by Nick O'Donnell and Andrew Daschbach who held both opponents to only one run.

M-A scored 10 runs and 19 runs in those victories with great hitting throughout the lineup. Daschbach helped his own cause with four hits, including a triple, double, two singles and five RBIs. Arnaud Laprais and Tyler Koo chipped in with two hits apiece and Jack Posthauer had a bases-clearing double.

The M-A defense turned three double plays in the tournament and played solid defense in each game. M-A was eliminated by Half Moon Bay in its fourth game.
