Local briefs: Sandoval transfers to Sonoma State

Former Woodside High basketball star James Sandoval has transferred to Sonoma State from Monterey Peninsula Junior College. The 6-5 forward was named first-team all-state and MVP of the Coast Conference as a sophomore last season. He previously led Woodside to back-to-back-to-back league titles.

"James will be our most efficient player," Sonoma State assistant coach Rich Shayewitz said. "He shoots high-percentage shots and knows how to make tough shots from anywhere on the floor. He's extremely competitive and knows what it takes to win. James is very versatile and will impact our team immediately."

Bulldogs earn legion victory

The San Mateo Bulldogs, a 17-and-under American Legion baseball team, upped its record to 22-7 (10-2 league) with a 3-2 victory over host Burlingame Friday night at Washington Park.

JJ Kunkel earned the win, pitching four innings before being relieved by Jack Ritzo. Matt Page pitched the seventh inning and got the save.

Forrest Armanino pitched a complete game for Burlingame.

The game's only extra-base hits were produced by San Mateo's Julian Merryweather (double) and Burlingame's Chris Blanton (triple). Burlingame's Mitch Foley had two hits, the only player for either team with more than one. San Mateo's Kevin McIsaac had two RBIs. Merryweather had one run driven in, as did Burlingame's Ryan Bender and Blanton.
