Tossed cigarette sparks two-alarm blaze; man cited
Firefighters were called to an Emerald Hills blaze on Wednesday that was allegedly sparked by a man who tossed a lit cigarette. The fire started on a hillside on the 900 block of Far Creek Way at about noon, and it threatened two homes, said Woodside Fire District Fire Marshal Denise Enea. No one had to be evacuated because of the blaze, which scorched about a quarter of an acre.
"A resident was smoking and flicked a cigarette, and a few minutes later the hillside was on fire," she said.
The resident tried unsuccessfully to extinguish the fire, and he was cited by the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office for tossing a burning object, Enea added. The fire was raised to two alarms because of dry conditions and the vegetation-rich area where it occurred.
