Stranger offering girl $1 sought
San Mateo police are searching for a man who allegedly approached a 10-year-old girl and offered her a dollar bill Thursday morning. The man walked up to the student standing in front of North Shoreview Montessori School, located on the 1300 block of Cypress Avenue, and asked her what time school started, police reported. He then offered the girl a dollar, which she refused, and he walked away.
Police could not find the suspect, whom they described as a 6-foot-tall Polynesian male with a muscular build and long, black hair. He was wearing a light-colored sweatshirt, dark jeans and dark sunglasses.
Police plan to step up patrols in the area and offered the following tips to parents Thursday:
• Make sure your children know their full name, address and phone number.
• Be sure your children know to call 911.
• Remind them never to talk to strangers or accept gifts from someone they and you don’t know. Additionally, tell them if a stranger tries to contact them, run away, scream and tell a trusted adult.
Police are asking anyone with information about Thursday’s incident to call the investigations services unit at 650-522-7650, or the secret witness line at 650-522-7676.
