Serra garners No. 2 spot in Div. I

Baseball seedings place PAL Bay champ Menlo School No. 2 in Div. III

The Central Coast Section baseball playoffs have expanded to 16 teams in each of the three brackets. Let the fun begin. Serra-San Mateo is the No. 2 seed in Div. I, while Menlo School-Atherton is the No. 2 seed in Div. III.

The Padres (25-6) host a first-round game against No. 15 Milpitas (16-15) on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

"That's about what we expected," Serra coach Pete Jensen said. "We've been seeded anywhere from one to five and it doesn't really matter. I thought we were the best team in our bracket last year and we got beat by Santa Teresa in the quarterfinals. They flat-out beat us. If you don't play well, you go home. There is no tomorrow. The team that plays the best for four games is the team that wins it."

Should the Padres get past the Trojans, the foe could be West Catholic Athletic League member St. Francis (19-11). However, the No. 10 Lancers are at No. 7 Homestead-Cupertino (17-12) in a rematch of last year's first-round matchup won by the Mustangs 5-4 at St. Francis.

No. 6 Menlo-Atherton (20-10) entertains No. 11 Santa Teresa (15-10), while No. 13 Carlmont-Belmont (16-14) travels to San Jose to play No. 4 Mitty (21-10). All Div. I games are this Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Defending CCS D-II champion Los Altos (20-10) is seeded No. 5 in the Div. II bracket. The Eagles host No. 12 Prospect-San Jose (18-8-1) Thursday at 4 p.m. Erik Johnson is slated to start on the mound for the Eagles.

"I heard Prospect has a real good No. 1 pitcher, so we'll probably face him," Eagles coach Sandy Wihtol said. "You got to go through Aptos to win the title. It would be great for us to get a crack at them, just to see what would happen."

No. 13 Aragon (15-15) travels to No. 4 Los Gatos (20-14), the winner facing the Los Altos-Prospect winner in the Saturday's quarterfinals at Washington Park in Santa Clara. No. 14 Palo Alto (15-12-1) ventures to No. 3 Leigh-San Jose (22-8), while No. 15 El Camino-South San Francisco (18-12) is at No. 2 Wilcox-Santa Clara (21-9). Aptos (24-4), which was ranked No. 1 in the state by Cal-Hi Sport a few weeks ago, is the No. 1 seed in Div. II. All D-II games are this Thursday at 4 p.m.

Menlo School (21-8) hosts No. 15 King City (20-8-1) this Wednesday at 4 p.m. in a Div. III game. No. 11 Sacred Heart Prep-Atherton (22-8) travels to play No. 6 Stevenson-Pebble Beach (19-6). No. 14 Half Moon Bay (17-10) is at Live Oak-Morgan Hill (22-7). No. 13 Hillsdale-San Mateo heads to No. 4 Pacific Grove (20-8-1) to play the Breakers. No. 9 Capuchino-San Bruno (12-17) goes over the hill to play No. 8 Scotts Valley (14-11).

Santa Cruz (23-7) is the No. 1 D-III seed. All first-round games are this Wednesday at 4 p.m.
